The chaste tree (Vitex agnus-castus) is a deciduous shrub or small tree with aromatic leaves and fragrant flowers. It's native to the Mediterranean and western Asia, but can also be found in southeastern North America. 

Appearance

  • Leaves: Gray-green, palmately compound, and oppositely arranged 

  • Flowers: Lavender-blue, white, pinkish, or bluish purple spikes that bloom in the summer and fall 

  • Growth: Can grow to be 6–25 feet tall, depending on climate 

Uses 

  • The dried fruit and leaves are used medicinally

  • The seeds can be used for seasoning

Growing conditions

  • Can be grown in warm winter climates as a vase-shaped shrub or trained as a single trunk tree 

  • In colder winter areas, it is more often grown as a herbaceous perennial 

  • Attracts butterflies, pollinating bees, and hummingbirds
